Sydney Writers' Festival Collaboration with Terry Whidborne

Yay, it's May and that means that the Sydney Writers' Festival isn't far away. We are now in our second year of supporting the Sydney Writers’ Festival and what a stellar event it is this year with their gorgeous new creative director Jemma Birrell.

This year Polli has collaborated with the talented illustrator Terry Whidborne to create a limited edition family of brooches which will be used as gifts for visiting authors and long standing volunteers. Terry’s work is amazing and whimsical and we’ve been so delighted at how he’s developed these four Australiana characters for the brooches. The designs are based on his original hand drawings which he then hand painted with watercolour. We’re so happy with the results of reproducing these illustrations on locally grown hoop pine ply. What an amazing illustrator and total delight to work with - you can see Terry as part of the SWF at this children’s event.

First off I came up with a theme called ‘ink’. As writers and artists both use this medium, it was a nice choice. Then Polli mentioned Australian and my head went into another direction. I threw away ‘ink’ and came up with – DREAM CREATE INDULGE.

Terry Whidborne

We love the peaceful, dream like state of these little characters. The parrot with it’s exotic headdress and warm tones, the fruit bat snuggled in her green cloak, the koala girl perched in the tree and the platypus with her green leaves and beautiful coat. Being Australian made supports local industry, ensures we can retain any reusable off cuts, means we can work closely with our suppliers, we have fast turn around on designs and we reduce any omissions in import freight. It can have it's limitations with what you can produce but then you find a supplier who is AMAZING and its a dream come true. We've been working with the guys at Modelcraft for several years now. Aside from being only a few suburbs away they're clever, and quick and they've just designed a great new website for their laser cutting services. The only confusing thing about working with them is that they're all called Matt!

Anzac Cookies

In preparation for Anzac Day tomorrow we tested out these gluten free ANZAC cookies. Thanks Simone for being head chef.

Ingredients
1 cup gluten free rolled oats
1/2 cup white rice flour
1/2 cup brown rice flour
1/4 cup organic shredded coconut
1 cup organic coconut sugar
125 gms organic butter
4 Tbsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp boiling water

Method
In the large mixing bowl or mixer combine oats, sifted flour, coconut sugar and coconut.
In a small saucepan, combine the butter and maple syrup, and stir over a gentle heat until melted.
Mix the baking soda with the boiling water in small bowl and add it into the melted butter mixture.
Stir the butter mixture into the dry ingredients.
Lightly grease two oven trays.
Place tablespoons of the mixture onto the oven trays; allowing room for spreading.
Cook in a slow oven for 20 minutes at 150 C / 300 F
Loosen while warm then cool on racks

Woot woot! Because we pack a lot of parcels here at Polli we wanted something to make that task more fun and beautiful, so we designed our very own Australiana tape. We use it on envelopes and parcels, and on gift boxes too.

This clear, decorative tape is made right here in Australia and features flora and fauna including magpies, galahs, wattle birds, wattle, grevillea and geraldton wax.

If you haven't heard about Clare Bowditch's Big Hearted Business yet then we're not sure where you've been hiding. Our inboxes and instagram feeds have been filled with glowing reports of how inspiring, empowering and life changing this creative conference was.

When Clare emailed us back in February and asked if we'd be interested in supporting the event we jumped on board, donating a custom made 'tea pot blue' Polli ring for everyone who attended. After all, who can say no to Clare.

We've been waiting to share these fantastic photos of the process behind our colour bombing shoot since last December. Just featured on the blog Design*Sponge, these photos are a behind the scenes look at how we created these colourful clouds for our current catalogue. We were inspired to celebrate colourby the Indian festival, Holi, which is happening this week.

So it all started with the building of a Dexter style 'kill room' which, to its credit, caught most of the powdered paint but we still had to get the photography studio painted back to white! That's a rare photo of our photographer Oliver Ford who was a great sport through this whole process.

Then we enlisted the help of the gorgeous Beattie Lanser who designed and made a white jump suit, specially for our photo shoot, and was a willing participant being bombed in the name of art.

One of the great things about this project is that it got nearly our entire team together, not your conventional corporate bonding but there's not much conventional at Polli!

And tah-dah! The results, beautiful clouds of coloured paints, mixing together mid air. xx

A Colourful Easter

Easter has a great tradition of craft projects; hat parades, egg baskets, bunny ears and coloured eggs. With so many little ones in the Polli family we were keen to try out different ways to dye eggs which were easy and interesting to do with a little helper.

You'll need:

- hard boiled white eggs
- muffin or friand pan
- food dye
- vinegar
- drying rack (like a cake cooling rack) with a plate underneath to catch the drips
- tape, electricians tape is good for a clean line, we used regular sticky tape and a thin silver tape we found at the art store.
- spot stickers or any shape you like, smaller size is best to accommodate the curve of the egg.
- rubber bands

1.   Follow the instructions on the pack when mixing up the dye, only make enough to half fill each friend cavity, put a different colour in each space, you can mix colours by using 2 dyes, remember to leave room for the egg to drop in.
2.   Mask areas on the eggs you don’t want dyed, we used sticky tape cut into triangles, dots, tape in lines and rubber bands you can also draw on the egg with crayon and in the areas of drawing the dye won’t stick. If you are planning to do a two colour egg we’d recommend to masking a larger area for the first dip.
3.   Place the egg in the dye, if you are using two colours we’d recommend starting with the lighter colour. Leave in the dye for a few minutes, according to how intense you want the colour to be.
4.   You may need to roll your egg around to colour the top as well, or you can put the egg in another colour the other way around and you’ll end up with 3 colours.
5.    Remove from dye to dry.
6.   Remove the masks and repeat if you want a second colour.

Emma van Leest - Sydney Show

Last week we checked the opening of Emma van Leest's Sydney show at the Olsen Irwin Gallery. We did a collaboration with Emma in 2011 with a series of intricate stainless steel jewellery featuring her scenes of adventures (think high seas and foreign lands) and exotica (think dodos and pineapples). Emma's latest exhibition of paper cuts are nothing short of amazing with some works having three layers of papercuts mounted to create depth and layered complexity. How one person can dream, design and skillfully handcut these artworks is incredible, how she can do all of this with a baby under 1 year old is truely inspiring.
